Adventure LK — Adventure in Kitulgala

Kithulgala

A rainforest-edge village on the banks of the Kelani River, roughly 3 hours from Colombo on the Colombo–Hatton road, and Sri Lanka's original white-water rafting hub since the 1990s.

Kithulgala sits where the lowland rainforest of the Makandawa Forest Reserve meets the Kelani River, about 90km east of Colombo on the A7 towards Hatton and Nuwara Eliya. It's best known internationally as the filming location for David Lean's 1957 classic "The Bridge on the River Kwai" — the old bridge pilings are still visible from the river during low water in February and March.

The town itself is a single main road of guesthouses, rafting outfitters, and roadside rice-and-curry shops, with the real draw a few minutes off the highway: the Kelani River's Grade 2–3 rapid stretch, and the Makandawa Forest Reserve behind it, one of the last substantial pockets of wet-zone rainforest outside Sinharaja.

How to get to Kithulgala from Colombo: ~90km via the A7 (Colombo–Avissawella–Hatton road), around 2.5–3 hours by car or private van depending on Avissawella traffic. Public transport: take a bus or train to Avissawella, then a local bus towards Ginigathhena/Hatton and get off at Kithulgala town — roughly 3.5–4 hours door to door.

From Kandy: ~65km via Peradeniya and Ginigathhena, about 2–2.5 hours by road — this is the more scenic route, climbing through tea country before dropping back into rainforest at Kithulgala.

From Ella: ~140km, around 4–4.5 hours via Nuwara Eliya and Hatton — most visitors combine Kithulgala with a hill-country loop rather than a day trip from Ella.

From Nuwara Eliya: ~65km via Hatton, about 2–2.5 hours, dropping roughly 1,400m in elevation from tea country down to rainforest — bring a change of clothes, it gets noticeably hotter and more humid.

Best time to raft the Kelani River: The river is runnable year-round because it's fed by the wet zone's southwest monsoon catchment, but water levels and rapid intensity vary. May–August (southwest monsoon) brings the highest, most exciting water. December–March is lower and calmer, better for first-timers and families, and is also when the old bridge pilings from the 1957 film are visible. Rafting is occasionally paused after heavy rain when the river runs too high and fast for safety — outfitters check levels each morning.
