Bird Watching — Makandawa Forest Reserve

80+ recorded bird species and 15+ Sri Lankan endemics in one of the last significant lowland rainforest patches outside Sinharaja — best at first light.

Overview

Makandawa Forest Reserve is a proclaimed forest reserve of lowland wet-zone rainforest bordering the Kelani River, and one of the more accessible spots in Sri Lanka to see wet-zone endemics without the crowds of Sinharaja. Over 80 bird species have been recorded here, including 15+ of Sri Lanka's 34 endemic species — Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Green-billed Coucal, Sri Lanka Grey Hornbill, Red-faced Malkoha and Sri Lanka Spurfowl among the birders' targets.

We go out at first light (around 6am) when the forest is most active and coolest to walk in, moving slowly along forest trails with a local guide who knows the resident territories. Bring your own binoculars if you have them — we carry a couple of spares.
