White Water Rafting — Kelani River
A 5km run (extendable to 10km) down the Kelani River's Grade 2–3 white water — 5 major rapids and 4 minor ones, about 2 hours on the water, no experience needed.
Overview
This is the original Kithulgala rafting run, on the same stretch of the Kelani River used since commercial rafting started here in the early 1990s. You'll paddle a 5km section with 5 major rapids and 4 minor rapids, Grade 2–3 depending on the season — big enough to get everyone soaked and shouting, manageable enough for total first-timers and most kids over 10.
Your guide runs a safety briefing and a flat-water paddle drill before you reach the first rapid, covering paddle commands, what to do if you go for a swim, and how to read the guide's calls. Between rapids there are calm pools where swimmers can jump in and float alongside the raft — bring a GoPro strap or dry bag if you want photos.
Want more? Ask about the extended 10km run, which adds a second, quieter stretch downstream for groups who want more time on the water rather than more difficulty.
Ask your guide for the rapid line-up on the day — exact names and order shift slightly with water level, but you'll always get the same 5 major + 4 minor sequence of drops.
