Explore Nature's Secrets — Makandawa Reserve

A slow-paced rainforest nature walk through Makandawa Reserve, home to 400+ recorded species of flora and fauna, guided by a local naturalist.

Overview

This is a general natural-history walk rather than a birding-specific outing — your guide points out what's active on the day, from endemic amphibians and reptiles (including several of Sri Lanka's endemic frog species) to medicinal plants used locally, giant lianas, and the forest's layered canopy structure. Makandawa has over 400 recorded species of flora and fauna, making it one of the richer accessible patches of wet-zone rainforest left outside the Sinharaja World Heritage core.

Questions people ask

It overlaps but isn't birding-specific — this walk covers the reserve's wider ecology (plants, amphibians, reptiles, insects) alongside whatever birds are active, while our dedicated Bird Watching tour goes out at dawn and focuses on endemic species.
